Mergener's Mystical Nights
Every year in august the Roman festival "Bread & Games" takes place
in Trier, Germany's oldest City. Main locations are the unique Roman
monuments, the "Kaiserthermen" and the amphitheatre. Both magnificent
structures have been placed on the UNESCO List of World Cultural
Heritage.
The program of the historical event offers attractive entertainment for everybody:
In the amphitheatre you can see exciting gladiators-fights and a parade
of Roman soldiers (legions), at night-time the arena is illuminated by
torches. In the Kaiserthermen you can experience the daily life in a
Roman camp on the Palästra. Craftsmen's presentations, artist
performances and storytellers, as well as fights of Roman soldiers
transfer visitors of each age into the ancient world. Different kinds
of taverns invite you to enjoy special meals. They serve authentic
Roman food but also little snacks for take away. In addition, the
festival includes various performances of Roman theatre, thematic tours
through Trier and its museums.
Furthermore the Roman festival offers special occasions in the evening:
The movie "Gladiator" is shown in an open-air cinema on a huge screen
in front of the magnificent architecture of the "Kaiserthermen". And a
special atmosphere in the "Mystical Nights" was created by Peter
Mergener & friends (Mergener et Amici) and his sound installations
in the illuminated underground labyrinth of the ancient bath. This
album contains the music by Peter Mergener and Alquimia, which was
specially designed for this event and it could be a remembrance or an
appetizer for the next festival. Lean back, enjoy the music and reflect

The Roman festival is presented by the city of Trier in co-operation
with the Kultur-Sommer Rheinland-Pfalz and Burgen, Schlösser,
Altertümer Rheinland-Pfalz.
The idea of the festival "Bread & Games 2002", in Trier comes from
Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, and has been worked out by Medienfabrik
Trier.
